LFCA Open Thread

For the next week or so, I'm not sure how much time I'll have on the Internet, so rather than scramble every evening or leave people wondering when the LFCA will post next, I'm going to declare the submission form on vacation for a week and start this open thread.

Here's how it works:
  1. Leave news below in the comment section. Make sure you include the category before you write the news (Miscellaneous News, Birthdays or Anniversaries, Loss Remembrances, Loss Announcements, Miscellaneous Support, Bed Rest Babes, Pregnancy Announcements, or Birth/Adoption Announcements.)
  2. Important: Just like the real LFCA, do not add new blogs to this list. They will not be put on the blogroll. To add a blog to the blogroll, please email me the link as well as which category would be the best fit. Once added to the blogroll, it will also be added to the new blog section of the LFCA if it fits the current time frame.
  3. Try to add your news in this format: Category: Blog Name (linked) Rest of blurb. For example: Support: Stirrup Queens is putting up a DIY version of the LFCA. Go leave news in the comment box. The html to write your blurb like that is in this red box:
  4. If you can't write your comment using the html format, simply cut and paste the url for the blog within the comment so people can go over. More important to get out the news than to have it look orderly.
AND THEN, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: read the list, click through, and leave comments. And check back throughout the day--people added things over time rather than just getting the whole LFCA in one gulp.

I have the comments monitored right now because I'm away from my computer for large chunks of time, but have email by phone, so it's easier to hit approve from the phone than it is to dive into the comment section and remove spam (sadly, a daily occurrence). There may be a lag between leaving a comment and seeing it go up, but it will go up.

595th Issue of the LFCA

Welcome to today's edition of Connections Abound. The point of Lost and Found is to level the support playing field. When LFCA works correctly, the newest blogger with the smallest readership can receive the same level of support as the oldest blogger with the largest readership. Anyone can submit news to LFCA by clicking here.

Lost and Found is open to anyone in the
infertility, pregnancy loss, adoption, pregnancy-and-parenting after infertility, assisted conception, living child-free after infertility or loss community (as well as anyone I inadvertently missed on that list). Please support the list as well as anyone posting announcements below.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS
New
  • Note from Editor: And now for the insanely long LFCA... Thank you for everyone who gave their thoughts on the last post. There's certainly more than enough news today to make it a daily occurrence, though it's more a note to keep submitting news when you have news. You don't need to stretch and create it, but we all have things going on where we could use more eyes on our words--whether it is for celebration or support.
  • Project: Calliope at Creating Motherhood writes: "Have a question? Have an answer? An open ended advice post is now up and I am looking for questions and people to answer them. Join in and be an expert!"
  • Project: After struggling with endometriosis, adenomyosis, a hysterectomy, and now an upcoming oopherectomy, Sonja is wanting to take back her womanhood--she wants to celebrate it, not look at it as a burden. She has some ideas of her own, but is really wanting to hear ideas/thoughts/advice from other women, regardless if they've traveled down the same path as her.
  • Advice: Praying for a Little One is looking for recommendations for a RE in the St. Louis area for a reader without a blog. Please leave a comment on her blog with your recs or email prayingforalittleone@gmail.com.
  • Advice: Julie could use some advice after getting a second opinion.
  • Advice: Jo could use a little advice or support from folks who have been on thyroid medications while pregnant. She's a little nervous about the implications and could use a little support right now.
  • Question: Mrs.Spit has a question about purchasing fertiity monitors - specifically about your experiences with the clear plan digital monitors with the sticks or the Ovacue systems. Have you used either or both? Did you like one better than the other? Do you happen to have one second hand that you might be willing to sell?
  • Question: Foxy Popcorn is new to the community, and is really enjoying leaving and responding to comments. How is she supposed to know when a blogger has responded to her comment by leaving a follow up comment on their post? She is also wondering if/how bloggers will know that she has left a follow up comment to their comment on her posts?

Why There is No LFCA Today

You may notice that this post doesn't look like the usual LFCA post with the computer icon in the corner and the neat categories of information (note to self: you must update that computer icon because it's over three years old). And that's because it's not your usual LFCA.

I only upload the LFCA when there is a critical mass of blurbs. And for the past few weeks, there have been random days where there simply isn't a critical mass of blurbs, such as today.

The LFCA only runs when you submit your own news or you submit your friend's news. Truly, it is here for your usage, and will run as long as people wish to use it. We are the only area of the blogosphere that I know of that has a clearinghouse hub space that anyone can use in order to direct people to their information when they need support.

Every other area of the blogosphere, you're shouting into the ether and hoping someone hears. In the ALI community, we actually have a resource which can provide the information in blurb form and hopefully the reader follows that link and gives support (though the LFCA cannot guarantee that people will click over to lend support. You can only lead a horse to water; you can't make them drink. Still, it works a lot of the time).

We have two options: if we want the LFCA daily, people need to submit news. Either their own or when they are reading a blog of a friend, submit their news for them. I've always said that it doesn't bother me to receive the same blurb from 10 different people. I just delete out the other 9 and put up 1. Or, we can start having the LFCA run semi-regularly, starting with three days a week. I am fine with either option, but rather than just move it to three days a week, I am setting this out there in case there are people who feel strongly about reading it daily.

Because there are people who expressed that it's their first blog stop of the day, or it's the way they catch up on news if they're busy at work, or it creates a more level playing field. So if the LFCA is important to you, take a deep breath and submit your news so people can know what is going on in our area of the blogosphere.

If you don't know what to submit, just read the LFCA and you'll get a sense within a few issues. Or peruse this list of items that are appropriate for the LFCA. I don't think we need to make this complicated nor do I think the LFCA needs to be revamped--it still has the same readership (in fact, the readership continuously grows), it just as fewer blurbs being submitted. Which says to me that people still find the LFCA a helpful site--even if they're not submitting their news.

PSA over. Your normal LFCA returns Sunday night, but I'd love to hear your thoughts below on whether LFCA should remain a daily occurrence or move to three days a week.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS
New
  • Results from the Vote: Yesterday, we voted on whether to include a "must read posts" section to the LFCA and people seemed divided. More telling--at least, I think--is how many people read the LFCA and chose not to voice their opinion, which maybe shows disinterest? So for now, let's hold off on introducing this section and stick to the news traditionally contained in the LFCA.
  • Question: Bec has high estrogen levels and asked on her blog "Does anyone know what their estrogen levels were like before their egg collection? And if you had a high number, did you end up hyperstimulating? How did you manage it? I need reassurance that I can still go ahead without ended up a complete ohss mess".
  • New Non-Profit: Erika's sister is working for a newly founded IF nonprofit in Indiana. See how you can help spread the word and be a part of it.
  • Article: Conceive Magazine states, "Once again, Conceive has searched the country to find the companies that offer their employees the most generous fertility and/or adoption benefits. We’ve listed all the 2010 information in chart form, and then used a star system to rank the benefits."
